The Great Grey Owl
After letting slip twice in the last four years the opportunity to see this astonishing bird of prey, here are finally some photos of a beautiful Great Grey owl (Strix Nebulosa).
Settled in the northernmost zones, where the forests give way to the arctic tundra, it rarely comes so far south, and when it does, it is usually for brief periods and usually in remote places. Being a nocturnal predator and a champion in knowing how to blend thoroughly makes its sightings even more difficult.
Luckily they had observed it a few days before, and the word had spread quickly among photographers, birdwatchers and simple nature lovers.
Unfortunately, however, the weather had been inclement, with rainy and dark days that had made me give up going to look for him.
Then suddenly, a beautiful day, even with large clearings and the much-coveted sunlight, constantly desired and sought by us photographers.
I went to the area hoping that it was still there and, at the same time, the fear that he was already gone. Instead…
I haven’t chosen the best position, as I couldn’t fully capture it. But I did it for a reason: I had the light behind me, and I was waiting for the sun to illuminate those eyes, as you can see in the first photos.
Light in photography makes the difference, and those eyes deserved it all. When the sky has clouded over, in fact, how you can see the difference is abysmal.
But those eyes were still there, and I couldn’t resist that magnetic light…

- The photos are always taken with a tele-zoom and then cropped: the other photographers and I kept a safe distance to avoid frighten or stressing the animal.
