The Black Pheasant

The Black Pheasant

The Black Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus var. Tenebrosus) is the result of a melanic mutation of the common pheasant and is not to be considered an actual subspecies.

The pheasants, native to Asia and some parts of Europe (Caucasus and Balkans area), have been introduced in an endemic way in the world as an ideal bird for hunting, freeing at the same time and in the same regions, individuals of different subspecies.

These, mixing over the years, have made it impossible today to draw up a list of existing subspecies, as the characteristics of geographical isolation fundamental for the definition of the concept of subspecies have disappeared.

But, like the common pheasant, this is an absolute wonder too!
