Retracing Wandering Italia: from Ortona to Popoli, to discover a different journey
When I thought of embarking on this adventure, perhaps transported by the images and meaning of Into The Wild, I thought mainly of the wild, of encounters with wildlife, and being alone in boundless places.
But, already after a few days, I found myself re-evaluating everything and discovering an unexpected, different part of Wandering Italia, but still parallel to my idea of travel.
Of course, there have been encounters with wildlife and the solitude and peace of immaculate places, such as the Gorges of San Venanzio, where I could stop and metabolise thinking about what I have seen and experienced to make it settle slowly inside me.
But Wandering Italia now also meant the first problems, the mistakes and the consequences to pay, difficulties and being forced to face my fears.
And, above all, the absolute availability of the people I met on the street: the help of the Carabinieri, the Mayor and the cook of the restaurant in Goriano Sicoli; an enlightening conversation with Alessandro in his pizzeria in Raiano; the children and older people of Vittorito and people who made everything to fix me an appointment with the president of the CAI di Popoli.
And then Wandering Italia becomes a different journey, which allows me to travel inside myself as well.
Into mine Into The Wild…
In 2018 I embarked on a journey, on foot and alone, from the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise towards Trieste, going up the Apennines and facing the Alps.
