Le foreste sono posti magici, luoghi incantati dove le fiabe prendono vita ed origine.

Questa, spesso, l’idea che abbiamo dei boschi e delle foreste e, infatti, l’incantesimo fiabesco che esercitano è proprio quello che amo catturare e raccontare nelle mie fotografie.

Nella realtà, però, non è proprio così, e il fatto che in questi luoghi regni spesso la pace e il silenzio, non vuol dire che non ci sia la spietata e forse crudele lotta per la sopravvivenza che è, comunque, la legge su cui si basa la Natura.

Nel libro “La vita segreta degli alberi”, Peter Wohlleben racconta e dimostra come gli alberi siano organismi viventi complessi che fanno molto di più dello stare fermi e ripetere ciclicamente la fotosintesi clorofilliana: gli alberi “pensano”, comunicano e si aiutano tra alberi della stessa specie. E, al tempo stesso, sono in guerra con alberi di specie diverse.

Ecco perché mi affascina sempre molto incontrare foreste miste, pensare e scoprire come le piante abbiano prevalso su altre, come siano riuscite a raggiungere la luce, magari soffocando alberi più piccoli e lenti nel crescere.

Come questa foresta di abeti, dove qua e là comparivano isole di possenti betulle che sono riusciti a rompere l’omogeneità del mare intorno. Tante altre avranno perso la battaglia e la scommessa, solo gli alberi più forti sopravvivono.

E chissà, alla fine raggiungono anche un equilibrio, e quella è la vera magia che percepiamo…

Forests are magical places, enchanted, where fairy tales come to life.

This, often, the idea we have of the woodlands and, in fact, the fairytale spell they wield is indeed what I love to capture and tell in my photographs.

In reality, however, this is not quite the case, and the fact that peace and silence often reign in these places does not mean that there is no ruthless and perhaps cruel struggle for survival which is, however, the law on which Nature is based.

In the book “The Secret Life of Trees”, Peter Wohlleben tells and demonstrates how trees are complex living organisms that do much more than standing still and cyclically repeating chlorophyll photosynthesis: trees “think”, communicate and help each other among trees of the same species. And, at the same time, they are at war with trees of different species.

This is why I am always fascinated by encountering mixed forests, thinking and discovering how plants have prevailed over others, how they managed to reach the light, perhaps suffocating smaller and slower-growing trees.

Like this fir forest, where islands of mighty birch trees appeared here and there that managed to break the homogeneity of the surrounding sea. Many others will have lost the battle and the bet, only the strongest trees survive.

And who knows, eventually they even reach a balance, and that is the real magic we perceive …
