“Avevano letto di quella valle, si erano interessati, ed avevano scoperto che fin dall’antichità, addirittura 4 secoli prima di Cristo, numerose persone e popolazioni raggiungevano a fatica quel posto così impervio, perché già ritenuto sede di una particolare presenza del soprannaturale. Vi avevano addirittura eretto un tempio pagano per celebrare la dea Mefite, che invocavano per proteggersi dalle febbri e dalla malaria. Sui ruderi di quell’antico tempio, i buoni cristiani avevano deciso di erigere il loro ringraziamento ad un altra figura sacra femminile, sulla base, o forse sulla scusa, della leggenda secondo la quale la Madonna sarebbe apparsa ad una pastorella. C’era anche la voce che si sarebbero potuti ritrovare i resti degli antichi tempi pagani, ma questi si trovavano proprio sotto la chiesa, ed allora era stato meglio dire che, purtroppo, mancavano i fondi per iniziare i lavori. Loro erano più che convinti che, se si fosse trattato di reperti cristiani, i soldi si sarebbero trovati, ed anche in fretta.”

Durante il mio soggiorno in Italia, avevo deciso, con un vecchio amico, di andare a fare una grigliata nella Valle di Canneto (Settefrati, FR), luogo cche ha rappresentato tanto nella mia vita e che, proprio per questo, avevo scelto come punto di partenza per il mio Wandering Italia.

Purtroppo, proprio quel giorno tutta Italia era battuta da violenti temporali, ma abbiamo deciso di andare lo stesso e di portare con noi anche Angelo che con il CAI di Cassino mi aveva accompagnato nella prima tappa.

Miracolosamente, abbiamo avuto un’ora e mezzo di tregua che ci ha permesso di godere appieno, e in completa solitudine, questo luogo che io reputo insito di magia.

Le alte vette, il fitto bosco di faggi, il silenzio assoluto… E poi le nuvole che risalivano le pendici scoscese, infilandosi tra gli alberi, nascondendo scenari per aprirne altri.

During my stay in Italy, I had decided, with an old friend, to go for a barbecue in the Canneto Valley (Settefrati, FR), a place that has represented so much in my life and which, precisely for this reason, I had chosen as a point starting point for my Wandering Italia.

Unfortunately, that very day all of Italy was being it by violent storms, but we decided to go anyway and to bring with us also Angelo who with the CAI (Italian Alpin Club) of Cassino had accompanied me in the first stage.

Miraculously, we had an hour and a half of good weather that allowed us to fully enjoy, and in complete solitude, this place that I believe is magical.

The high peaks, the dense beech forest, the absolute silence … And then the clouds that climbed the steep slopes, slipping through the trees, hiding scenarios to open others.

Wild, lonely, heretical places. Is there really something supernatural here?

I don’t know, I can only feel that I am deeply attached to these places and that I owe a lot to them: because, with the mysteries they guard and with the utopian vision of places that are still immaculate, they forged my creed.

And the man I have become.
