Essere amici e far parte di un gruppo, della propria zona, di fotografi e appassionati di animali e fauna selvatica, in questo caso di rapaci, è importantissimo se si vogliono aumentare le possibilità di avvistamenti importanti, soprattutto se rari come questo.

Il motivo è semplice: essendo spesso in giro, molti come me quasi tutti i giorni, utilizziamo l’app BAND per segnalare gli avvistamenti, visto che è possibile che qualcun altro sia in zona, o che possa raggiungerla velocemente, aiutandoci quindi a vicenda.
Così, quando è arrivata la notifica dell’avvistamento del falco cuculo, ho cambiato i programmi e mi sono precipitato in quella zona, nella speranza di riuscire a fotografarlo.

Devo dire la sincera verità, sono stato molto fortunato, perché solo dopo pochi minuti dal mio arrivo, questo esemplare di falco cuculo (Falco vespertinus), è arrivato iniziando a dare uno spettacolo che ci ha tenuto impegnati per più di due ore: abbastanza impavido e incurante della nostra presenza, volava su dei pali di una staccionata da dove controllava il territorio, avvistava la preda, piccoli o grandi insetti, e si tuffava su di loro per poi mangiarli.
Davvero emozionante, soprattutto quando ha permesso, a me e quasi tutti gli altri fotografi, di essere veramente vicini, tanto da apprezzarne la bellezza, non solo attraverso il tele-zoom, ma anche ad occhio nudo. Anzi, a volte il mio 150-600 mm era addirittura troppo “lungo” per poterlo fotografare completamente!

Il falco cuculo è un piccolo rapace appartenente alla famiglia dei Falconidae, lungo circa 28–34 cm, con un’apertura alare di circa 65–75 cm.
Il maschio adulto è tutto grigio scuro, ad eccezione di becco, zampe, anello perioculare e ventre rosso corallo. La femmina ha la parte inferiore del corpo arancione e la parte superiore e le ali grigie con barre più chiare. L’esemplare da noi fotografato era un giovane, nel suo primo piumaggio.
È un uccello migratore, dalle lunghe distanze: è plausibile che il nostro amico abbia passato l’estate al Nord e piano piano sta iniziando a scendere verso posti più caldi, andando a svernare probabilmente nell’Africa meridionale.

Non sappiamo quanto si fermerà, ieri, per esempio, altri fotografi non sono riusciti a vederlo nonostante ore ed ore di appostamento.
Speriamo solo che non sia stato vittima di rapaci più grandi, può capitare, e che riesca a trovare cibo a sufficienza per affrontare il lungo viaggio che lo aspetta.

Chissà, magari ci rivedremo l’anno prossimo!

Being friends and being part of a group, in your area, of photographers and lovers of animals and wildlife, in this case of birds of prey, is very important if you want to increase the chances of important sightings, especially if rare like this one.

The reason is simple: being often around, many like me almost every day, we use the BAND app to report sightings, since it is possible that someone else is in the area, or that they can reach it quickly, thus helping each other.
So when the notification of the red-footed falcon came in, I changed my plans and rushed to that area, hoping to be able to photograph it.

I have to tell the truth, I was very lucky, because only a few minutes after my arrival, this specimen of red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus), arrived starting to give a show that kept us busy for more than two hours: quite fearless and unaware of our presence, it flew on the poles of a fence from where it controlled the territory, sighted the prey, small or large insects, dived on them and then ate them.
Really exciting, especially when it allowed me and almost all the other photographers to get really close enough to appreciate its beauty, not only through the tele-zoom. Indeed, sometimes my 150-600 mm was even too “long” to be able to photograph it completely!

The red-footed falcon is a small bird of prey belonging to the Falconidae family, about 28–34 cm long, with a wingspan of about 65–75 cm.
The adult male is all dark gray, with the exception of beak, legs, periocular ring and coral red belly. The female has an orange lower body and gray upper and wings with lighter bars. The specimen we photographed was juvenile, in its first plumage.
It is a long-distance migratory bird: it is plausible that our friend has spent the summer in the North and is slowly starting to descend towards warmer places, probably going to winter in southern Africa.

We do not know how long it will be here, yesterday, for example, other photographers were unable to see it despite hours and hours of stalking.
Let’s just hope it hasn’t been a victim of larger birds of prey, it can happen, and that it can find enough food to face the long journey that awaits it.
